China

Lea was from the Rolla and Dawson Creek area of northern British Columbia (“Mile Zero” Alaska Highway) and Louise from Peace River in northern Alberta. They met while students at Peace River Bible Institute in northern Alberta. While there they decided the Lord Jesus Christ was calling them as missionaries to China. They went separately as single missionaries.

Louise graduated first and began her missionary career with China Inland Mission (CIM) in 1947. She was the first CIM missionary educated at PRBI. Lea journeyed to China two years later in 1949 as part of the “CIM 49ers,” the last group of new missionaries to enter China with CIM.

They were both incarcerated in different cities by the Chinese Communist government in 1950. In 1951 they fled from their respective house arrests and met again in Hong Kong. Due to the effects of dysentery that Lea was recovering from, Louise did not even recognize him when they first saw each other again! They had “had an understanding” since their Bible school days—meaning they intended to marry each other in God’s perfect timing. A missionary supervisor in China (Herbert Kane?) had delivered Lea’s engagement ring to Louise. Hong Kong became their “destination wedding” site in 1951.

Their ocean voyage honeymoon from Hong Kong back to Canada took them through several port cities of Japan.
